BILBO’S LAST SONG (at the Grey Havens)...byJ. R. R. Tolkien

Image
We remember this character don't we? Day is ended, dim my eyes, but journey long before me lies.  Farewell, friends! I hear the call. The ship’s beside the stony wall.  Foam is white and waves are grey; beyond the sunset leads my way.  Foam is salt, the wind is free; I hear the rising of the Sea. Farewell, friends! The sails are set, the wind is east, the moorings fret. Shadows long before me lie, beneath the ever-bending sky,  but islands lie behind the Sun  that I shall raise ere all is done;  lands there are to west of West,  where night is quiet and sleep is rest. Guided by the Lonely Star.  beyond the utmost harbour-bar, I’ll find the havens fair and free. and beaches of the Starlit Sea.  Ship, my ship! I seek the West,  and fields and mountains ever blest. Farewell to Middle-earth at last,  I see the Star above your mast!

Leisure ... by William Henry Davies

What is this life if, full of care, We have no time to stand and stare. No time to stand beneath the boughs And stare as long as sheep or cows. No time to see, when woods we pass, Where squirrels hide their nuts in grass. No time to see, in broad daylight, Streams full of stars, like skies at night. No time to turn at Beauty's glance, And watch her feet, how they can dance. No time to wait till her mouth can Enrich that smile her eyes began. A poor life this if, full of care, We have no time to stand and stare. William Henry Davies

Captain O my captain...by Walt Whitman

Image
O Captain! my Captain! our fearful trip is done, The ship has weather’d every rack, the prize we sought is won, The port is near, the bells I hear, the people all exulting, While follow eyes the steady keel, the vessel grim and daring;                          But O heart! heart! heart!                             O the bleeding drops of red,                                Where on the deck my Captain lies,                             ...

To the virgins, to make much of time...by Robert Herrick

Image
Gather ye rose-buds while ye may,  Old Time is still a-flying;  And this same flower that smiles today  Tomorrow will be dying.  The glorious lamp of heaven, the sun,  The higher he’s a-getting,  The sooner will his race be run,  And nearer he’s to setting.  That age is best which is the first,  When youth and blood are warmer;  But being spent, the worse, and worst  Times still succeed the former.  Then be not coy, but use your time,  And while ye may, go marry;  For having lost but once your prime,  You may forever tarry. About the Poet Robert Herrick (24 August 1591 – buried 15 October 1674) was a 17th-century English lyric poet and cleric. He is best known for  Hesperides , a book of poems.
